The controversy started in Veracruz’s City Hall regarding the closing of the local zoo “Miguel Angel de Quevedo”, since some people claimed that the conditions to have animals in captivity are not acceptable.

The problem aroused after this Sunday’s bulletin where the City Hall made public that the Bengal tiger “Cucho”, was taken out of the zoo because he got sick and it is being taken care of.

This Monday, the local councilor Jose Gonzalez Martinez said that he will request the mayor the closing of the zoo because it presumably doesn’t meet the wild life’s regulations.

He set an example with “Cucho”, suffering from a disease called “myelopathy”, which affects the nervous system, causing the immobility of the lower extremity. Gonzalez Martinez also recalled last year’s deaths of the Thai fox, the spider monkeys, and the crocodiles.

Gustavo Alfonso Torres, manager of the zoo, rejected the accusations regarding the wild life’s regulations. He said that they are feeding the animals properly, as well as cleaning and keeping the places where they live hygienic, saying that there is no reason to close it.
