There should not be speculation regarding the existence of “drug money” in political campaigns, because it is not beneficial at the beginning of an electoral process, as it could create fear and abstentionism.

This was said by the spokesperson of the National Electoral Institute (INE in spanish), Sergio Vera Olvera, affirming that it is an obligation of the political parties to stop, avoid and prevent the infiltration of organized crime in the electoral process, and if they do, they should present the evidence to the General’s Attorney Office.

“To talk about the interference of drug money in political campaigns is very risky and dangerous, because we need to have enough evidence, we could speculate but, how much evidence do we have?”

He said that this type of statements chase away voters when the goal of the INE is to encourage participation.

“Talking about drug money in campaigns gives a lot of work to journalists and they love it, but it is not healthy to start speculating the infiltration of that money, it could give them a few pages of information but we are looking for participation from the citizens during the electoral process.”

In this sense, he said that the citizens complain about the House of Representatives or the Congress, but when they have the opportunity to choose their members they don’t do it.

“If we do not take the chance to choose our representatives, if we keep looking at political parties instead of proposals, we should not complain about it.”

We need to vote but the majority of the people do not do it and they are disappointed when the only way to change is participating, said Vera Olvera while referring that there is a lack of civic conscious participation in political parties, government, church and press institutions.

He accepted that there has been a generation of corrupted process where everything was a fraud, nevertheless, he express that in the present you cannot say that the vote is not respected.

“I can guarantee you that in the INE, the electoral process are not just fighting against non democratic activity, as well as respecting the decisions made by citizens.”

He said that the making of elections in Mexico is the easiest thing in the world, but the difficult part is the trust on the INE, since is not easy to convince somebody of who won or lost, “in our country the one that loses goes to court immediately.”

This happens here and in any other part of the world the loser accepts their lost; this act of civility lands on society because the political parties are made of citizens and the acts of corruption are inside every institute.

At the end, Vera assured that democracy exists in Mexico, and we have to respect the votes of all the people that assisted to the ballot boxes. “The other ones are disinterested people, and I do want to express my nonconformity, my first obligation is to participate on an election, and if I don’t, I don’t have the right to start talking.”
