The recognized movie critic, Silvestre Lopez Portillo, said that the industry of Mexican cinema is living its best times in years, breaking attendance records in 2013 as well as earning international awards.

The professor of the University of Las Americas Puebla (UDLAP) and the Mexican-Russian Cinematography Institute “Serguei Eisenstein” has already covered the Cannes Film Festival seven times, pointed out that Mexicans are not watching all Mexican cinema, focusing just on a “little group of actors”, when they should see new faces that are doing things well.

While vacationing in Veracruz Port, he expressed that in the present, Mexican cinema “has everything, production, actors, direction, good stories, we are coming from the best year (2013), with three blockbusters, having other awarded films like “Heli””.

He explained that cinema with worldwide impact that is offered by Mexican directors like Alfonso Cuaron, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu or Guillermo del Toro, actors from Veracruz like Ana de la Reguera, Kuno Becker, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia, Martha Higareda, have taken risks and some had being lucky, but the quality is also there.

A sample of growth in the Mexican cinema industry is the production of the first 3D movie, “Más negro que la noche” (“Darker than the night”), was presented a few days ago, and even though he didn’t like it a lot, he referred to it as a quality and extraordinary film.

“Cinema could be a really good business if it works and gets promoted, but the trick and secret relays on the audience. Today films are working good, but people has to approach unknown cinema that is done in the country, with other kind of stories, we have more than 60 productions each year, that is excellent, we shouldn’t focus on a group of actors.”
