The catholic church condemned the criminalization of immigrant groups hat cross Mexican territory trying to get to the United States, because even after the progress on these field’s protection laws and the efforts from authorities, there are still risky situations for them.

The spokesman of the Veracruz’s diocese, Victor Manuel Diaz Mendoza, said that the population needs to become more sensitive and support the Central-American immigrants within their possibilities.

“The church is speaking, but the social structure has to be changed, and it is a group task, from journalists and priests to the government, because it would not work if only the government is the one motivating while at a social level we don’t make an effort,” he declared.

After being asked about immigration in a press conference, the priest recognized that, in occasions, we stigmatized Central Americans because of their physical appearance, charging them with illicit activities.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to observe them beyond their appearance, looking at their necessities and complications and what they live while trying to get to the U.S.

“The immigrants are people looking forward to their future, people that want to get to the United States to get a job, but the journey is tragic and violent, costing some of them their lives.”

The religious leader indicated that the church has tried to support immigrants that cross the country, in Veracruz for example, they offer food and hostel to four immigrants weekly, nevertheless, the spaces they have are insufficient and they require a bigger support from the society.

Nationally, he indicated that leaders of the catholic community met with authorities to request a proper attention for immigrants.

“They come to one of the churches in downtown where they stay the night, offering them food, medicine, but it is a challenge that we all have as a society.”
